Corydon, Iowa, July 22, 2015: – In conjunction with the start of another school year and the pre-season training for a variety of contact sports, the Midwest Rural Telemedicine Consortium of Mercy Health Network will be presenting “Sports Related Concussion and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: How to Recognize, Diagnose and Treat,” a live videoconference with Dr. Mary Russell of Mercy Medical Center-Des Moines’ Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. You are welcome to attend the presentation on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Dr. Russell is a board certified physiatrist who attended medical school at Des Moines University and completed Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, with extensive training in neuro-rehabilitation and traumatic brain injury. She will discuss aspects of the following:
• What is a concussion and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI)?
• Why is it a problem?
• Recognizing and diagnosing a concussion and mTBI
• Treatment
• Prevention
• Risks and consequences of concussion and mTBI
• When is it safe to return to play?
