Joel A. Wells, D.O.

South Central Iowa Medical Clinic and Obstetrics

Originally from neighboring Plano, Iowa, and graduate of Seymour Community High School, Dr. Wells attended Northeast Missouri State University and received his medical degree from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1986. He completed his internship at Warren General Hospital, Warren, OH followed by his residency at Barberton Citizens Hospital in Barberton, OH. Upon completion of his training, Dr. Wells chose to return home to rural Wayne County and joined the Wayne Family Medical Center in 1989.

Dr. Wells is board certified in Family Practice and is the Departmental Chief of Service for Cardiac Rehab, Health Information Management, Obestrics, Pediatrics, and QA/QI Infection Control.

He has been instrumental in starting and lending his support for several programs including; the Drug Assistance Program, which provides cost savings to patients in need who otherwise would be unable to afford their prescription medications; the Des Moines University Family Practice Medical Student Residency Program teaching students aspects of rual family medicine; the development of a Mercy Rural Family Medicine Residency Program at WCHCS in 2016, with the focus on obstetrics and surgical skills for practicing rural family medical providers in medical health professional shortage areas; and has continually mentored students throughout his years of practice.

Dr. Wells and his wife, Bonita, have two grown children and live in Corydon. Outside of work he enjoys supporting local community events, flying and spending time with his grandchildren.
