WCHCS Receives Gift of Little Hats Big Hearts™

Volunteers from around Iowa are joining the American Heart Association, in conjunction with the Children’s Heart Foundation, to celebrate American Heart Month by knitting and crocheting red hats for babies born in February at Iowa Hospitals. Little Hats, Big Hearts ™ honors babies, moms and heart-healthy lives in a special way.

Butch and Susie Gibbs of Humeston, Iowa presented the Wayne County Hospital and Clinic System (WCHCS) in Corydon with a total of 25 red hats crocheted by Susie for distribution to newborns at Wayne County Hospital. In addition, Susie has crocheted 275 more red hats to be presented to other local hospitals, and to the Central Iowa American Heart Association office in West Des Moines to give to 25 hospitals across Iowa that provide obstetrical services. Last November Susan Davis of Powersville, Missouri also presented WCHCS a box full of beautifully knitted red hats for our newborns as part of the same program.

“We are grateful for these wonderful, meaningful gifts. This is such an inspiring, visual way to help educate and develop awareness of heart disease and congenital birth defects,” commented Jill Henkle, RN, WCHCS OB Director.

By drawing attention through the Little Hats, Big Hearts™ project it is hoped to provide resources and inspire moms to take their family’s heart health to heart, while also raising awareness about congenital heart defects, the most common type of birth defect in the world.
